About SAP Social Sabbatical and SAP Shoroq

SAP started the SAP Social Sabbatical program with Pyxera as partner organization in 2012. This program created by SAP Corporate Social Responsibility aims at helping and supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses in emerging markets. There are 4 different possibilities to join a social sabbatical: I applied for the SAP Social Sabbatical for global engagement. Within the 2017/2018 assignment, SAP brings 120 key talents in teams of 12 colleagues to 10 different emerging and fast-growing markets over four weeks.

SAP describes it as follows: "SAP employees are placed in highly diverse teams to dedicate their skills, expertise, and know-how in a unique, short-term assignment. The assignment achieves triple impact: solving concrete strategic challenges for client organizations, developing leadership skills of participants, and advancing SAP as an employer of choice."

You ask yourself what is in for big corporations to offer such initiatives to their employees? According to an article from Stanford Social Innovation Review, "today's volunteers are tomorrow's leaders":

I applied for the social sabbatical in May 2017. Early July, I happily received the acceptance to my application and I got to know that I was assigned to Durban, South Africa, during October 2017. Later in July 2017, the assignment was changed to Rabat, Morocco. Our team of twelve colleagues brings together people from our SAP locations in Argentina, Austria, Australia, France, Germany, India, Portugal, United Kingdom and the USA.

3rd weekend: On the trails of kings and Romans

As with the previous weekend posts, I don't spend too much time on words but prefer to let pictures speak by themselves. We started the weekend in Fès, the second largest city of Morocco and the oldest of the 4 royal cities. Its Medina has been protected as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Our first stop was at the house of Mehdi's mother Fatima, who invited us for a tea and delicious pastries. From there, we were brought to our Riads, before Fatima provided a guided tour through the Medina with a lot of shopping. Week 3: Bringing the puzzle pieces together

Week 3 is already over? Time was flying by already before but this week felt like a day.  The week started with an interview with Amid, one of the mentors. He coaches the startups in communication, marketing and business strategy. After working with Maroc Telecom, he started working as a freelancer to support companies like MCISE with mentoring. He joined MCISE a year ago. Generally he meets the startups once a month for 2 hours. Last year, he supported 25 startups at MCISE. According to him their biggest challenge is the long-term vision and to think big. He is working as a mentor because he is challenged himself, he enjoys the contact with these young entrepreneurs and he loves their stories. Before he joined MCISE, he didn't know about social entrepreneurship at all, so he learned a lot from his first engagements.
